Dorian Coninx talks about mountains, TIME and Alpe d'Huez

dorian coninx interview TIME Triathlon Alpe d'Huez
He is one of the strongest men of the World Triathlon Series, with his recent victory in 2019 on the Bermudes stage, and one of the best assets of the Poissy Triathlon team on the Grand Prix in France. Riding his TIME Scylon, Dorian Coninx is impressive. The Isère (native of Échirolles) grew up in the "neighbourhood" of Alpe d'Huez, and kindly answered our few questions.

Have you ever climbed Alpe d'Huez? If so, how would you describe the ascent?

I climbed it a few times. The first time was during the Alpe d'Huez Triathlon a few years ago. I had suffered all along so I don't have a very good memory of it !

What is your relationship with the mountain?

I grew up in Grenoble, spending a lot of time in the surrounding mountains. It is a place that allows me to recharge my batteries and makes me feel good. When I go on a training camp or competition, I miss it pretty quickly.

Did being from and growing up in Isere have an influence on your qualities as a triathlete? Have you developed a particular talent?

I think that growing up in Isère, with all the outdoor activities you can do there, has allowed me to love and enjoy a lot of sport. It certainly helped me, but it's still very general.

Is it interesting for a WTS triathlete like you to train in the mountains of your region or is it not good?

I think it's interesting because it brings difficulty. You have to know how to vary and also train on the flat fields but it is an interesting added value. Moreover, it makes the rides much more fun!

Although you have participated in the TIME Triathlon Alpe d'Huez a long time ago, what advice would you give to participants in the Triathlon M?

I already participated in it 6 or 7 years ago! I will tell them to be careful not to get excited on the flat or at the beginning of the climb because the end can be very long: I speak with full knowledge!

This year you are using a TIME Scylon Disc (note: Dorian has also just received a TIME Alpe d'Huez 01 Disc, another model on test - for free - during the TIME Experience 2019 from July 22nd to 26th). Could you tell us a little bit about it?

I really like this bike. It is a performance-oriented bike but on which we have a real comfort to ride. It is relatively nervous and very stable in the curves, which is very good on downhill slopes!

Your Poissy Triathlon teammate, Tom Richard, has become the man to beat after his two victories in the event. When will you come to challenge him?

I would love to come! First to take revenge on myself and to come and tickle him, especially since we're training together now, it would be a fun challenge!
